Aesthetics and Cosmetics

What Is a Perfect Smile?

When someone mentions cosmetic dentistry, you may automatically think of someone you know who has incredibly straight and white teeth, but what exactly constitutes a perfect smile?

It's very much down to individual preferences, and while you may want your teeth to look like your favorite film stars, the reality is that everyone's mouth is different, and a smile is as unique as a fingerprint.

Aesthetics

Aesthetics is actually a branch of philosophy that deals with concepts such as beauty, and when applied to cosmetic smile makeovers can be considered as anything which creates an aesthetically pleasing result.  This doesn't necessarily mean that it has to be perfect.

A good example of this would be people who have a gap between their front teeth, which is called a diastema.  Although a lot of people may wish to close this gap completely, it can often be an integral part of someone's personality, as in the cases of Samuel L Jackson and Madonna.  These types of features can sometimes look better than perfection, and are all part of having a unique smile.

It really is down to individual choice as to whether you choose to have a complete transformation, or a more subtle look.  One choice isn't necessarily better than the other, as it is all down to what you feel comfortable with and what is suitable for you.

Cosmetics

If you are considering having a large amount of cosmetic work then it's well worth thinking about what you would like to achieve.  Cosmetic reconstruction can achieve wonderful results, and can literally rebuild a smile.

Think about whether you would like a perfect “Hollywood” smile, and whether or not it will suit your personality.  A cosmetic makeover can transform a person's smile, and if you are having all your teeth crowned or veneered then you can choose the whitest and brightest shade possible.  There's no doubt that having white teeth creates a more youthful appearance, but teeth that are extremely white make it more obvious to other people that you have had cosmetic dentistry work and most times a more natural look is more complimentary.

It all comes down to what will make you happiest, and there is no right or wrong, as it's all about creating a look at you’re satisfied with.  We want you to be happy with your cosmetic makeover so you won't want to stop smiling.  To quote the lyrics of Louis Armstrong, “When you’re smiling, the whole world smiles with you.”
